Jim Howard, President & CEO

Jim Howard is a 27-year medtech executive focused on value creation with novel approaches to patient care.  Jim came to Readout as CEO from his EIR position at venture capital firm, BioGenerator, an initial investor in Readout.  

He is a co-founder and initial CEO of Washington University spinout SentiAR, the first AR platform for interventional procedures, currently in clinical trials. Jim led a team of 50 as VP of Sales in CareFusion’s respiratory business unit through the acquisition by Becton Dickinson in 2016. He is a board director at POC medical device company, MagBiosense, and is an active mentor to new CEO’s in the St. Louis healthcare ecosystem.  

Jim is passionate about behavioral changes in chronic diseases, putting the healthcare in the hands of patients.  He has an MBA from University of Missouri-St. Louis and remains active in collaborations with Washington University researchers.


Tim Ratto, PhD, Founder and Chief Scientist

Tim founded Readout with the sole mission of giving people more control over their quality of life by providing new tools to better understand how daily choices impact their health.

Tim is a Biophysicist and spent his early career in the US National Laboratory system, Lawrence Livermore and Lawrence Berkeley Laboratories, developing materials and sensing technologies for chemical, biological and radiological warfare agents. He became interested in how similar technologies could be applied to improving the human condition, specifically in the measurement of human biomarkers, and founded his first company in 2008.

Prior to Readout he was the Chief Technology Officer at Breathometer where he led research and development of new products for the home health monitoring market. Before this, Tim led R&D at Adamant Technologies, developing miniaturized sensor technologies for a variety of markets including home health and medicine.


Matt Ratto, PhD, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer

Matt is a co-founder of Readout and an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto. With over 20 years of experience studying the social implications of emerging digital technologies, he develops design-based methods for incorporating social and organizational needs within information systems.

Matt’s interest in the design and implementation of cutting-edge health services has taken him to Cambodia, Tanzania and Uganda, where he has helped develop CAD/CAM tools and 3Dprinting services for orthopedic clinics.

Matt’s passion is in developing digital health services that emphasize the agency of users and take into account the complex social and behavioral factors that influence care.


Ismene Grohmann, Head of Global Marketing

Ismene joined Readout from Abbott Diabetes Care where she held the role of Senior Director of Innovation, responsible for Upstream Digital Product Design and New Commercial Strategies for the sensor-based glucose monitoring business. Prior to that she was Director of Global Strategic Marketing at Abbott Nutrition, with responsibility for Brand Positioning and Global Marketing Campaign Development for infant and medical nutrition brands.

Before joining Abbott, Ismene has held positions of increasing responsibility in Product Management and Marketing with global skin care leader Beiersdorf in Germany and China, as well as Senior Consultant with global marketing consulting firm EffectiveBrands (now Kantar).

Dr. James McCarter, Scientific Advisor

Dr. James McCarter is an experienced executive and researcher with a track record of success in early-stage life-science technology companies. Most recently, he led research and clinical operations for San Francisco-based Virta Health, a tech-enabled nationwide medical provider that delivers the first clinically-proven treatment to safely and sustainably reverse type 2 diabetes without medications or surgery.

He is an Adjunct Professor of Genetics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and an Entrepreneur in Residence at the venture fund BioGenerator.

Previously, Dr. McCarter was the Founder, President and Chief Scientific Officer of Divergence, Inc., a front-runner in the application of genomics to infectious disease and agriculture.

He is an author of over 60 scientific publications and patents and has served on over one dozen non-profit boards and professional advisory boards including two World Health Organization panels.


Ravi Vemulapalli, Head of Application Development

Ravi has over 20 years of experience leading information technology initiatives and product development. He is a visionary and goal-oriented executive leader with demonstrated experience in planning, developing strategic plans and implementing cutting-edge information solutions to address business opportunities

He joined Readout from CenturyLink where he managed a team for Cloud Products and Managed Services. He has also led teams at Monsanto, Express Scripts, EHI, Mastercard, AT&T and a few other firms and startups.

Ravi is passionate about digital health and wants to be part of patient-centric initiatives to improve population health.


Trey Suntrup, PhD, Director of Clinical Development

Trey is a former researcher and product engineer with over 10 years of experience developing novel device technologies in both academic and industrial settings. He joined Readout from his position as an entrepreneur-in-residence at BioGenerator, a St. Louis based venture capital firm and early Readout investor.

Previously Trey was a Translational Sciences and Entrepreneurship fellow at Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, where he helped academic faculty transition commercially promising technologies from the lab to the private sector. He also served as an investment analyst for several venture capital firms in the life sciences.

Trey is passionate about partnering with mission-driven founders as they advance new device and digital health technologies to improve patient care. He holds a PhD in physics and electrical engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
